This is the 2nd year of the Cabernet Franc Carnival and it already seems to be gathering a fair bit of momentum, as well as a geeky following! This years carnival is being supported again by Avontuur - who of course also make a great Cab Franc. Owner of Avontuur, Michael Taberer, is very passionate about showing this grape off to the world. This year for the first time, Cobie van Oort (founder and organiser) also put together the Cab Franc Challenge and at the media launch, Christine Rudman, convenor of the Challenge talked us through some of the wines entered. She was delighted to report that of the 32 wines entered, there were really no bad wines! The Top 6 are only just better than the rest - a real testament to the quality. We were treated to a range of wines from most regions in South Africa and each wine certainly has its very own aroma and palate. Thanks also to Oldenburg who treated us to a meaty lunch, which we then paired with the various Cab Francs we had tasted. What a treat! I look forward to the Carnival being held on Saturday 21 May at Avontuur! Book now - there are very limited tickets being issued.
