A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

By September 5, 2022General

MR de Compostella Vertical Collection
2012 – 2017

Once in a lifetime opportunity to gain access to rare and sold-out vintages. A Decade of Consistency showing the ongoing evolution of a Cult Wine.

LIMITED 12 CASES RELEASED

The story of MR de Compostella inspires all who hear it. With its consistent quality, this cult wine has been carved into history as one of South Africa’s most legendary and collectable red wines desired across the globe.

On a starry night in Africa, Bruwer and his friend and fellow winemaker Mzokona (Mvemve) sat around a fire and philosophised about what makes a truly remarkable wine, a world-class wine, a wine that people dream about. They decided to collaborate and create a singular wine consistent with the very best in the world. MR de Compostella was born!

Mvemve Raats released the maiden vintage MR de Compostella 2004 in 2006, guided by an ambitious philosophy of achieving the very best final quality blend through ruthless vineyard and barrel selection and an overriding obsession with consistency of quality, vintage after vintage.

All five Bordeaux varieties are tasted and evaluated in a rigorous blind scoring process selected from the best barrels of that particular vintage in order to create the final blend.  The variety scoring the highest becomes the leading component of that vintage.  Should the blend not be equal or better than previous vintages the wine is not released as was the case in 2010 and 2019.

What developed was an outstanding wine with breath-taking complexity, depth, and notable age-ability.  A wine not driven by a particular style or variety but by what was best from that vintage.  A wine driven purely by Quality.

To celebrate our upcoming 2020 vintage release in October, we have, for the first time, curated a very rare and limited vertical MR de Compostella case covering six legendary vintages from 2012 to 2017.

For this extraordinary case, Bruwer pulled most of these wines from his private cellar as they are sold out in the market. These wines are all investment wines, with some vintages having achieved R6 000 or more per bottle on recent auctions.

This case gives a snapshot of time and illustrates the ongoing evolution of these great wines. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire six back-to-back vintages.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAY:

MR de Compostella 2012

Never shy and always a real charmer, the 2012 does what it promises and then a whole lot more. Rich, cool, dark fruited, opulent nose full of blueberry, vanilla pod, black currant and cassis leaf. So sumptuous, generous in fruit and utterly charming whilst retaining a distinguished air of quality. Always been a lovely wine, and I suspect there is not a lot of it around now as it is such a seductive wine that’s hard to resist drinking in its youth. Drink now or bury it in your cellar for another 15+ years.

MR de Compostella 2013

A vintage that did not stand out on paper but in the vertical flight was one of the most impressive wines. With a dusty nose full of wet stone minerality, the aromatics speak of a cooler vintage style laced with graphite, dried straw, baking herbs and pithy black berry fruits. The palate is where the wine takes off like a rocket and really shines. Woven together very tightly, the intensity and vibrant saline blackberry intensity combined with tart crunchy acids make this wine stand out from the rest. So elegant and persistent on the finish, this is the real deal — a super classy wine drinking well now with many years ahead of it still.

MR de Compostella 2014

Like the 2012, the 2014 has always been moulded on an opulent and generous style with creamy overt black and blue berry fruits, sweet vanilla spices and a rich layered and textured palate that keeps on giving. Probably a vintage that won’t shut down, so if you enjoy youthful opulence, this one is for you.

MR de Compostella 2015

The 2015 is genuinely a compelling wine with a classic nose, more reminiscent of a fine, opulent Cru Classe Pauillac. There are beautiful perfumed notes of assorted purple flowers and fresh violets that melt away to reveal ripe, intense notes of crème de cassis; blueberry crumble, cherry kirsch liqueur and damson plum. More structured and intense than its riper plumper predecessor, the 2015 delivers more intensity and tannic restraint and brooding classical depth. Bit of a blockbuster. A wine for 30 to 40 years.

MR de Compostella 2016

A warm dry vintage that is reflected in the lower than usual Cabernet Franc and higher Cabernet Sauvignon portion from a cooler vineyard close to the sea in False Bay. Rich, plush, ultra-opulent, expressive, but also perfumed and lifted with violet, sweet lavender and sleek polished oak melting into classic Cabernet cassis and saline black berry opulence. Lovely precision and focus but is also sufficiently taut and textured. A wonderfully luxurious style of MR.

MR de Compostella 2017

The nose chimes with beautiful aromatics of the black Cabernet fruits, both Franc and Sauvignon. Superbly bright and lifted, this classy wine reveals attractive aromatic notes of cherry blossom, violets, lilacs and fresh rose petals underpinned by seductive chocolate-coated red cherries and crème de cassis. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied but very refined and elegant, balancing the intensity of fruit and flavour with textural harmony and finesse. Super fine and minerally tightly focused, this is a wine for the long haul but which can also be drunk in its youth due to its bright freshness and creamy, elegant length. Is this the best MR to date? I think so…only time will tell.

RAATS SUMMER TOUR – EUROPE AND THE UNITED KINGDOM

With much excitement, Bruwer embarked on his first European and UK tour since 2019 to showcase our recently launched Eden High Density Single Vineyard Cabernet Franc 2019 and Chenin Blanc 2020. He also showed new vintage releases from the Raats Family Wines and Bruwer Vintners stable.

Our first stop was the Netherlands at the Miele Experience Centre – Culinary Institute in Utrecht, where a group of young chefs representing the JRE – Jeunes Restauranteurs got together for a stellar display of culinary art paired with Raats Wines. It was a huge honour to be part of this dynamic display of innovation and excellence from young chefs across the continent. They share, create, develop and inspire one another whilst encouraging each other to develop their talent to become their best. Along the way, we stopped in The Hague, Heemstede and Haarlem to conclude a superb Dutch leg of our tour. Next up was Belgium, where we had events and private tastings in Bruges and Brussels. We finished this leg of the trip off at the exquisite Paul de Pierre Restaurant in Maarkedal with other South African wine industry friends.

Last was the UK, where we hosted an array of spectacular events around London. We did a group training with our agent and had a special tasting with Joanne Locke MW. After that, we had food and wine evenings at the trendy Milk Beach Restaurant in Queenspark and the South African-owned icon High Timber Restaurant on the River Thames, where we reunited with many dear South African friends. Our last evening was a highlight as we hosted a private tasting with Greg Sherwood MW at Handford Wines, followed by dinner at the world-famous China Tang Restaurant at the Dorchester Hotel, attended by luminaries such as cricket legend Alan Lamb. A fairytale end to our travels.

“True artisanal winemaking is based on intuition, sensitivity, precision and passion.”
