A Trio of Pinotage

A Celebration of our National Heritage Grape this Heritage Month

INTRODUCING TWO MAIDEN RELEASES IN OUR HERITAGE CASE

Bruwer Vintners was conceived to celebrate our Bruwer family heritage. Our guiding mission is to craft exceptional wines showing its heritage, unique terroir and ultimately create a new future for South African Wine. This month saw us releasing two new wines in the BV portfolio.

Bruwer Vintners’ heart lies firmly in the soils of Stellenbosch. With a strong emphasis on heritage, it is no coincidence that we chose Pinotage, South Africa’s heritage grape, as the pillar to build Bruwer vintners’ legacy on.

Pinotage, like our country and the Bruwer Vintners Brand, has a rich story, vibrant and pioneering, carried forward by dedication and innovation.  Pinotage is a bold red wine, and its history is a wild one. The legend goes that intrepid traveller and University of Stellenbosch’s first professor of Viticulture, Abraham Izak Perold, dedicated much of his life collecting nearly two hundred varietals from around the world to bring back to the Cape Winelands. In 1924 he crossed Pinot Noir and Hermitage (Cinsault), creating four seedlings that became the world’s first Pinotage.

These seedlings were almost lost forever in his back garden, but were discovered years later by Professor Charlie Niehaus during a routine garden clean-up and taken to Eisenberg to further inspect and propagate. Perold left no notes, but some say the idea came about when he tried to bolster the Pinot Noir Grape which struggled in the area’s climate by hybridizing with the robust Hermitage (Cinsault) known to thrive in any condition. His actual intentions we will never know, but through a series of serendipitous events, we now have the uniquely South African Red wine we enjoy today!

BRUWER VINTNERS BLANC DE NOIR 2022
Maiden Vintage

“Blanc de Noir” meaning white from black refers to white wine made from black grapes. As the name suggests, this form of winemaking originates in France, where this method was initially used in making champagne. It allows for great depth of flavour combined with fresh fruit and light acidity creating a perfect summer wine which pairs equally well with food or enjoyed on its own.

Made from Grenache and Pinotage, the aromatics are delicate and restrained, showing fine nuances of delicate rose petals, fynbos, complex pink rock candy, and a dusty, stony minerality. On the palate, the wine is crystalline and fresh.

What the critics said…

“The measure of a great Rosé is of course drinkability and the ability to deliver hedonistic pleasure – this wine excels in both. The perfect wine for a summer of indulgence”

BRUWER VINTNERS RED BLEND 2021
Maiden Vintage

Fabulously bright with a perfumed nose, there is a wonderful palate weight, a concentration of crunchy bright fruits, and classically shaped tannins underlying a wine which has excellent poise and balance.

Grenache, Syrah and Pinotage give this special South African red blend the gravitas to be enjoyed along some of the best Rhône Blends in the world.

What the critics said…

“ A sexy, seductive red”

LIBERTE PINOTAGE 2017
93 Points Tim Atkin
Top 10 Pinotage

Made from 20-year-old bush vines, the aromatics show a cool savoury red cherry fruited complexity with plenty of maritime sea breeze salinity, sappy cranberry and bramble berry fruits, sweet grilled herbs and hints of potpourri. The palate is exceptionally polished, tight-knit and fine-grained with a drying tannin density, bright citric acids, cool stony mineral length, and tangy salinity on the finish.

Drink now to 2033+

What the critics said…

“Another very accomplished expression from Bruwer Raats and Gavin Bruwer Slabbert.”
