B Vintners which is the joint venture between Bruwer Raats of Raats Family wines and cousin Gavin Bruwer which sees them using fruit sourced exclusively from Stellenbosch and after reviewing the dry Muscat d’Alexandrie 2014 under this label back in March (see here), yesterday I got the chance to look at the rest of the range was on show courtesy of agent Tracy Van Maaren. The stand-out wines were as follows:
B Chardonnay 2014
50% of the wine was matured for 10 months in oak of which 50% was new. Lemon, some struck match plus subtle and entirely attractive oak-derived character on the nose. Lovely fruit concentration, fresh acidity and a pithy finish. Pure and refined.
B Haarlem to Hope 2014
54% Chenin Blanc, 42% Semillon and 4% Muscat d’Alexandrie. Matured for 10 months in old oak. On the nose, a floral top note followed by pear and white peach plus a hint of spice. Again, impressive fruit concentration, bright acidity and a savoury finish. Possesses both breadth and depth without being weighty. The Muscat is definitely in evidence and this will irk some but I think it adds a point of interest (cf. Cindy Crawford’s mole). A wine of real interest.
B Liberté 2014
From Pinotage. Matured for 14 months in oak, 10% new. A really enticing nose showing red and black cherries, potpourri and dried herbs. The palate shows really juicy fruit upfront before the firm (slightly bitter?) tannins typical of the variety kick in. Another exciting new-wave Pinotage.
