Raats Family Wines Celebrates New Vintage Release

Today we’re talking about Cabernet Franc. The wines we create from this cultivar is an expression of our lifelong passion for and sustained focus on this variety. This month we launch three new vintage Cabernet Franc wines – Family Cabernet Franc 2019, Dolomite Cabernet Franc 2019 and the Cabernet Franc-lead Jasper Red Blend 2019.

I fell in love with Cabernet Franc in France; back home, I decided that when I have my own winery, I will specialise in Cabernet Franc as it has the structure of Bordeaux, the elegance of Burgundy and the spice from Rhone, all in one. Everything you want from red wine. For the past 22 years, we have been devoted to this niche variety, nurturing it in the vineyard and cellar to produce premium wines.

Our Cabernet Francs reflect the unique soils of Stellenbosch’s Polkadraai Hills, where we strive to create wines for people to love, enjoy and hopefully sometimes dream about.

In celebration of the launch of these three wines, Gavin and I curated a special case for our Raats Private Cellar members.

Family Cabernet Franc 2019

5 Star – Platter’s
94 Points – Tim Atkin
93 Points – Neal Martin MW

Dominated by fruit from Polkadraai Hills, a superb, refined Cabernet Franc, the wine has a very engaging nose. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and finely juiced acidity. Sour cherry and black truffle develop toward a harmonious finish. There is a beguiling purity to this Cabernet Franc and will age supremely well in bottle.

An investment wine.

Dolomite Cabernet Franc 2019

95 Points – Neal Martin MW
4.5 Star – Platter’s
91 Points – Tim Atkin

The wine has an energetic, tensile nose of wonderfully defined red and black fruit, sage, bell pepper and clove aromas; hints of dried blood emerges with time. The palate is very well balanced, taut and fresh, with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, a harmonious sophisticated finish and suggestions of black pepper on the aftertaste. This Cabernet Franc will age gloriously, yet drinks like a premium Chinon today.

Jasper Red Blend 2019

93 Points – Tim Atkin
4.5 Star – Platter’s
90 Points – Neal Martin MW

The wine has an intense nose of black cherries, boysenberry, cassis and iodine; tobacco notes emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, taut and fresh, with grainy tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a harmonious finish, a wine that will age supremely. The wine is perfectly balanced, with great complexity and structure.

A seductive bold wine with great complexity and structure.

Harvest 2022 Update

The start of a new year is synonymous with grape harvesting in the Cape Winelands and the beginning of a new vintage.

Our harvest started on 9 February, with the first Pinotage being delivered to our cellar for our newest cult favourite, the B Vintners Method Ancestrale sparkling wine. This wine has been a runaway success, not available for sale on our website, due to high demand. Contact us at office@raats.co.za to find out more.

This was soon followed by Chenin Blanc, with our maiden vintage from the newly planted Bluegum Grove Blocks in Polkadraai Hills looking outstanding. We have just completed all our Chenin Blanc and look to complete our reds with Cabernet Sauvignon towards the end of March.

Gavin and I agree that this year’s harvest looks extremely promising, with exceptional crop quality and yield.

We had a really good winter and late summer rain that stimulated the growth of the grapes – essential for a favourable crop. Cold winter temperatures allowed the vines to rest, and a cooler spring and early summer created optimal conditions for a brilliant harvest. We expect great complexity and elegance, soft tannins and a favourable acid/sugar balance. We look forward to an extraordinary harvest and stellar 2022 vintage.

Paul Roos Gimnasium Football Sponsorship

We are thrilled to announce that Raats Family Wines and Mvemve Raats have extended our sponsorship of PRG Football to become the main sponsor for the next three years. In addition to the Football sponsorship, we are also proud to sponsor the newly established PRG Football Academy, which recruits and moulds 71 boys and girls ages 3-13 years old in developing both on-and-off field skills and character.

Our brands align in many ways with accountability, integrity and respect, forming the foundation of both brands’ ethos.

“To enable PRG FOOTBALL to build a highly recognisable program to enable the overall development of PRG boys to men whose aim is to become men of integrity and achievement while competing at the highest levels and serving as a source of pride for the Stellenbosch community.”

Vision Statement PRG Football

Raats Family Wines has a deep Connection with PRG, with all three my sons and Gavin having matriculated from this great institution. We share similar values and a deep love for the Stellenbosch community and believe it is a perfect partnership. PRG soccer is not about coaching boys to play soccer; it’s about developing young men with integrity and life skills, and in doing that, the results will show on the field.
