“Every vineyard has something special to offer; it is up to the winemaker whether he has the ability to unlock it.”
Bruwer Raats

For our Old Vine Chenin Blanc, we handpick grapes from three very old dedicated vineyards in the Polkadraai Hills to create a wine that reveals the very essence and beauty of Chenin Blanc.

The 2022 vintage marks 22 years of producing this wine. As the first wine released by Bruwer under his own label in 2000, it reflects his lifelong passion and dedication to mastering this variety. Critics and wine lovers around the world laud this wine as one of the great Chenin Blancs produced in South Africa year after year, continuously evolving and improving. And as Bruwer puts it, “We work tirelessly to produce wine of outstanding quality and class, and we hope that people will know that when they buy a bottle of Raats wine, they trust the quality in that we would not bottle a wine which we did not believe is exceptional”.

Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2022 is an exceptional vintage, and we invite you, our Raats Private Cellar members, to be the first to taste it with this special pre-release offer.

What the critics say…

With each release, this wine improves in stature; 2022 is an exceptional year for Chenin Blanc, and the quality is clear in this impressive wine. The aromatics are opulent, showing quince, white peach and yellow apple with fenugreek spices alongside the wet stone minerality. The stone fruit character follows through, adding balance. Chalky minerality and great acidity give incredible intensity, a harmonious balance and a long, piercing finish.

A Masterclass in Chenin Blanc

Harvest 2023

As the harvest commences each year, we lift our heads in gratitude to the elements which, together with the earth, worked in harmony to produce a bountiful harvest.

The third week in January saw the start of harvest 2023, with the first grapes being pressed in our cellar. Chenin Blanc and Pinotage for our Bruwer Vintners Methode Ancestrale, were bought into the cellar first, followed by more Chenin passing through our sorting table and press each day.

On 8 February, we reached the pinnacle of our Chenin Blanc harvest with the first Eden High Density Single Vineyard grapes being pressed. We dedicate a lot of time, attention and detail to farming the Eden Chenin Blanc High Density Single Vineyard grapes. There is something special about this little block on our Eden farm, which is treasured by the entire family and everyone who spends so much time creating this wine. This year’s harvest looks very promising, and we will share more updates in next month’s newsletter.
