In The Cellar

20% whole bunch, spontaneous fermentation, after cold soaking took place for an extended period. Very subtle extraction during fermentation, with a light punch through daily.

After fermentation, the wine was basket pressed to new French oak, where it remained for 10 months. From there it was racked to a neutral French oak barrel, where it rested for another 8 months before the wine was prepared for bottling.

Tasting

The nose shows lively dark berry fruit and Morello cherries with hints of star anise and ground fennel seeds, from here a floral top note of violets further lifts the nose of the wine. The wine is exceptionally linear and precise, yet lithe and elegant.

The complex dark berry fruit follows through from nose to finish with a minerality that reflects the 100% decomposed dolomite granite of the soil. The wine is characterized by its amazing concentration derived from the extremely low yielding single vineyard.

Tasting Notes

Indulge in the captivating aromas of lively dark berry fruit and Morello cherries, intertwined with hints of star anise, ground fennel seeds, and cedar. Exceptionally linear and precise, yet lithe and elegant, this wine unveils layers of complex dark berry fruit, underscored by a minerality that reflects the unique terroir of our single vineyard.

Raats Family Wines

Established in 2000 and located in the Polkadraai Hills of the striking Stellenbosch winelands, the Raats Family winery was originally a partnership between brothers Bruwer and Jasper Raats (who stepped away from the business after some time).

Bruwer and Jasper’s father, Jasper Senior, acted as viticulturist during the foundational stages of the winery, but sadly passed away in 2009, leaving Bruwer Raats to continue on the family legacy.

Raats Family Wines was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of Polkadraai Hills as an official ward within Stellenbosch in 2007. With its unique decomposed dolomite granite soils, proximity to the ocean and south facing slopes it allows for great depth of quality terroir, making itself known as producing some of the most exciting wines in the country.
