In The Cellar

20% whole bunch. Spontaneous fermentation after cold soaking took place for an extended period.

Very subtle extraction during fermentation, with a light punch through daily. After fermentation, the wine was basket pressed to new French oak, where it remained for 10 months.

From there it was racked to a natural French oak barrel, where it rested for another 8 months before the wine was prepared for bottling.

Tasting

The wine’s inviting nose displays lime, green apple, with white peach and pineapple. Here subtle spices of ginger, angelica and white pepper are entwined with florals of peach blossom and honeysuckle.

The palate shows further fruit depth with quince, kumquat, mandarin orange and pear, against a backdrop of steely minerals. Hints of roasted hazelnuts and almonds add to the complexity of the palate.

The wine is exceptionally linear and fresh with a fine texture and finishes with notes of fennel and the ginger spiciness promised by the nose.

Raats Family Wines

Established in 2000 and located in the Polkadraai Hills of the striking Stellenbosch winelands, the Raats Family winery was originally a partnership between brothers Bruwer and Jasper Raats (who stepped away from the business after some time).

Bruwer and Jasper’s father, Jasper Senior, acted as viticulturist during the foundational stages of the winery, but sadly passed away in 2009, leaving Bruwer Raats to continue on the family legacy. 

POLKADRAAI HILLS

Raats Family Wines was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of Polkadraai Hills as an official ward within Stellenbosch in 2007.  With its unique decomposed dolomite granite soils, proximity to the ocean and south facing slopes it allows for great depth of quality terroir, making itself known as producing some of the most exciting wines in the country.

Founded in 2000 by visionary winemaker Bruwer Raats, in partnership with his cousin Gavin Bruwer Slabbert, Raats Family Wines specialize in Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc and has been crafting soil-driven wines of exceptional quality ever since.
